Contemporary beadwork joins archaic loom weaving (as is suggested by the ancient term "wefan") for an artifact to be worn. Or use them for Hang Ups - over the computer, in your kitchen (to hold you mustard seeds of course), or on the rearview mirror.

Small buttoned pouches are created plain weave or tapestry style on a lap loom or Inkle. Free form design incorporates wrapping, rya, interlocking, laying in, the use of stria, soumack, thick thin texturing, and come-and-go warp face techniques, even various needlework disciplines to achieve unique fabric.

Novelty yarn, glitz, loops, foil, boucle', ribbon, chenille, and yarns whose long fibers (such as eyelash) are combed to the outside make rich must-touch textures. Subtle shaping of the flap completes the bag.

Then they are hand stitched to a satin-fine leather lining (pig suede or 3/4 oz. buckskin) or to silk or faux ultra-suede. Sides are hand sewn in heavy duty thread.

Now they will get sketched and the beading configuration planned. A color family of assorted beads is chosen. The lip and sides are beaded and personality emerges with development of the fringes - pig tails, loops, macrame' or net patterns, long or short or asymetrical fringe, stalagtites (kate's encrusting technique), split ends, and/or drops. If this isn't enough they'll get bead bridges, embroidery, charms, couching, or even more beads.

Closures: simple button hole & ugly button, unique drop-thru, friction draw, staggered drop-thru, or thong wind-on.

Necklace: strong & long, corded or plaited fibers, woven or thong, adjustable with knot.

Hang up straps: 8" - 10", beaded their entire length.

Beads: include gem nuggets, glass, coral-glass, ceramic, metals, fiber, bone, shell, heishi & ugly beads.
